ILDRA Ride at Castle Ward

The Irish Long Distance Riding Association (ILDRA) held their last ride of the 2005 season at Castle Ward on Sunday November 13. The weather held and a total of one hundred and four riders turned out for the day. Organiser Gail Potter had laid out a four-mile route within the National Trust grounds at Castle Ward. These trails took in some beautiful woodland scenery. The trees were just starting to loose their leaves, the sun was bright and the day crisp without being too chilly: all in all an autumn day to remember.

An additional four-mile loop was available for those who chose to ride out to Sandford’s farm on the shores of Strangford Lough. This section, through farm lanes and stubble fields, was simply awesome and everybody riding back home seemed to be smiling.

ILDRA’s next ride, for the start of the 2006 season, will be in January. Please watch our website www.ildra.co.uk or the press for details.

ILDRA RIDE AT GOSFORD full ride report

The Irish Long Distance Riding Association had and excellent turnout of Junior riders for their Halloween Pleasure Ride at Gosford Forest Park. The ride organiser Kirsten Catterall was delighted to see a grand total of thirty-two junior riders out on the day with many of them in fancy dress costumes. There were witches, cowboys, knights in shining armour, ghosts, little devils, fairies, skeletons, an escaped convict, more witches, the Queen, Robin Hood and even Darth Maul! I am also fairly certain I saw that well-known Leinster branch member, Kevin Croke, dash by once or twice!

ILDRA RIDE AT ROSTREVOR

The Irish Long Distance Riding Association held Pleasure Rides and Competitive Trail Rides at Rostrevor Forest Park on Saturday September 24th. The organiser Lorraine Sloan had marked out an eleven mile pleasure mile route that could be shortened to make suitable distances for younger riders. Six year old Tara Findlay rode her cousin’s pony Scottie with her mother Wendy Findlay. Tara was delighted to complete five miles and is looking forward to her next outing.

The Rostrevor ride is very scenic with glorious views over Carlingford Lough; however some steep uphill sections make it a real test of the fitness of horse and rider particularly over the longer distances.

There were nine CTR completions. They were: Forty miles: Claire Sedgeman on Bedonia; Ruth Sedgeman on Questhill Endeavour and Elaine Burch on Dunmore Diana. At thirty miles: Ian Gault on Double Trouble, Robyn Catterall on Charlie Four Socks, and Helen Mc Farland on Just Paddy. At twenty two miles: Cora Keary on Joe Hatter, Lorraine Giles on Vicky, and Rosemary York on Akiel.

The next ILDRA ride will be held at Tollymore on Sunday 9th October 2005. Those wishing to take part in a pleasure ride may enter on the day.

There will also be National Championship classes over the following distances: 25 miles, 40 miles and 50 miles, and entries for these classes should be made by Saturday 1 st October 2005. Perhaps you are a Pleasure Rider, but would be tempted to try your first CTR at this event? For entries and enquires please contact Lorraine Giles,. Tel: 028 91883900

ILDRA RIDE AT BALLYPATRICK FOREST

The Irish Long Distance Riding Association’s Ride at Ballypatrick Forest near Ballycastle attracted twenty seven Pleasure Riders and six Competitive Trail Riders. The weather was balmy and the conditions ideal for a gentle ride around the ten mile loop marked out by organisers Rosemary and Richard York. An additional three mile loop was also available and many Pleasure Riders took advantage of this.

There were six CTR completions. Gail Baillie on her horse ‘I’m not Quickly’ completed a thirty-one mile CTR and this took both of them to Bronze Shamrock level. Well done! (Forty miles next time Gail?) Also completing this distance was Philip Giles on Miller’s Light. The remaining four riders completed a twenty-six mile CTR. They were: Robyn Catterall on Charlie Four Socks, Ian Gault on ID’s Double Trouble, Helen McFarland on Just Paddy and Lorraine Giles on Vicki. The vet for the day was Cathal Carr from Millburn Veterinary Practice in Coleraine.

The next ILDRA ride is to be held at Kilbroney Forest near Rostrevor on Saturday September 24th. There will be a Pleasure Ride and CTRs (up to forty miles) available. For more information please contact ride organiser Lorraine Sloan on 028 44831744

A lady Without a Horse, Can Anyone Help Her?

The following is a request made to the ILDRA web site, I hope someone can help with the information Mary requires.

"Hello Gary",

I wrote to you several months back about my moving from California to Ireland this summer and my hopes of making long-distance riding contacts here. I am very happy to have at last made the move, and am getting settled into a new home in Ennis. Co Clare is wonderful horse-country, I know, but can you tell me if there are any distance-riders in the area?

I am afraid I am without my own horses at the moment - and will probably have to stay horseless for the next year or so while I get established here. So, if you know of anyone looking for a catch-rider - and one kind enough to take pity on a horseless rider - please keep me in mind. I am a very experienced rider (my race record can be accessed via the AERC website), and would have no problem helping condition green horses.

Thank you for your help,

Mary Elliott  E-Mail

The Irish Long Distance Riding Association (ILDRA) held a ride at a new venue last weekend.
Slieveanorra Forest in Co. Antrim proved to be an excellent choice for all levels of riders. Many of the tracks were straight long stretches of good going which made for easy riding.
The paths led up through the forest to Slieveanorra Nature Reserve from where there were outstanding views up and down the Antrim coast; towards Ballycastle in one direction and Cushendun in the other.

Please pay your entry in the correct currency – in Northern Ireland GBP £, in the Republic €uro.

Contact ride organisers before you attend an event; even if you are intending to complete a PR, rides can be cancelled at the last minute due to problems on the land we cross for various reasons.

Don’t forget to keep logged onto  our website, this is updated regularly by our Webmaster Gary McKie from Greyabbey (Sometimes I get a bit behind though).

To assist the Awards Committee for the end of the year, if you have completed a Shamrock grade this year please advise in writing the events where you attained the award to: KIRSTEN CATTERALL 136 NAVANFORT ROAD ARMAGH BT60 4PX.

Help at rides – ILDRA cannot organise rides for you without the many volunteers that make our events happen.  Our thanks to all those who have already helped in 2005, and if you have yet to help, please do, it does not have to be your own Branch event to qualify for awards at the close of the season.

Riders: Please remember that the ride organisers, stewards, vet writers and timekeepers are volunteers, this is their time and they are giving it up for you to be able to compete. No matter how the day goes, thank you goes a long way!
