ILDRA RIDE AT SHANES CASTLE 2005

HUGE TURNOUT FOR ILDRA AT SHANE’S CASTLE RIDE

The Irish Long Distance Riding Association was delighted to welcome one hundred and twenty six riders to their Pleasure Ride at Shane’s Castle! This event has always been popular, but this year the response from horse enthusiasts of all disciplines was outstanding. Horses of many sizes and descriptions took the six and a half mile route through the lanes and fields of the Shane’s Castle estate in excellent style. There’s no doubt that this time of year makes, both the horses in their new summer coats, and the countryside flush with new growth, look fantastic.

Lorraine Giles, the ride organiser, and her family had a busy day keeping everything running smoothly. They marked the route early in the morning; took entries in a never ending stream for several hours; checked each group back in as they returned; gave out rosettes; marked up logbooks and finally took down all the markers at the end of the day! ILDRA could not exist without the dedication of its ride organisers so a big ‘Thank you’ to Lorraine and her family for all their hard work.

Out on the tracks, the route started along a private road within the estate. Here the wind seemed to whip past and many riders opted to settle their mounts with a brisk trot to the end of the road. Next came a large open field with farm tracks around the edge and this was followed by a section right beside the M2. Indeed a short diversion would have taken one right under the M2! The bridge over ‘Six Mile Water’ then led riders into the sheltered woodland areas for which Shane’s Castle is famed. Thousands of bluebells lined the tracks over the next few miles. Also adding to the scenery was the vivid pink of rhododendrons and the pungent smell of the wild garlic in full flower. The odd passing shower seemed only to sharpen the senses and to enhance the already beautiful picture. A number of riders went around for a second or even third loop – a Pleasure Ride fee gives each rider up to twenty miles riding!

ILDRA’s next ride will be on Sunday 22nd May at Slieveanorra Forest Park, Co. Antrim. Both Pleasure Rides (up to 20miles) and Competitive Trail Rides (up to 50miles, pre-entered members only) will be available. ILDRA is delighted to welcome non-members on Pleasure Rides.
