SLIEVEANORRA RIDE.
The Irish Long Distance Riding Association (ILDRA) held a ride at a new venue last weekend. Slieveanorra Forest in Co. Antrim proved to be an excellent choice for all levels of riders. Many of the tracks were straight long stretches of good going which made for easy riding. The paths led up through the forest to Slieveanorra Nature Reserve from where there were outstanding views up and down the Antrim coast; towards Ballycastle in one direction and Cushendun in the other. Eight riders completed Competitive Trail Rides (CTR) and several Shamrocks were earned as a result. Special congratulations go to Judith Hyndman and her horse Ardkill Mo, who both achieved their Gold Shamrock as a result of completing a fifty mile CTR. They completed in excellent time and finished in fine style. Well done! Ian Gault and his horse Be Merry achieved Bronze Shamrock after successfully completing a thirty mile CTR. Ian rode with Gary McKie who also took his new horse Bay Gale to Bronze Shamrock. Other finishers were; 50 miles - Suzanne Perry on Savak and Helen Perry on Metallica. 20 miles – Helen McFarland on Phaymon; Claire Sedgeman on Saoirse and Dorothy Heath on Schoheen. Several pleasure riders also turned out to enjoy the day and explore the new trails around Slieveanorra Forest. This venue is sure to be popular in future years as word gets out about the excellent riding conditions. ILDRA’s next ride is a Pleasure Ride to be held at Castle Ward on Sunday 12th of June. This is a change from the advertised venue, which was unfortunately unavailable. Riders (non-members welcome) can start anytime between 10.30am and 1pm, and ride out in their own groups at their own speed. The route will be marked with orange tape. Castle Ward is always a popular venue and an extra visit at this time of year is bound to be a welcome treat. The organiser Gary McKie can be contacted on 028 4275 8499 for more details.
