ILDRA at Castleward January 2008 The ninety riders who converged on Castle Ward Estate last Sunday enjoyed an unseasonably warm, Springlike day, with sunshine and snowdrops in equal measure. While organisers Kath and Kirtsen Conly could not claim any personal responsibility for the magnificent setting with the imposing backdrop of Castle Ward House, they had marked an interesting route through the woods and paths of the estate, which gave riders plenty of opportunity to admire the wonderful scenery, including glimpses of Strangford Lough and the rolling countryside surrounding the estate. The Ulster Branch of ILDRA would like to express its appreciation to the National Trust for permission to ride in the estate. The early season Pleasure Rides run by ILDRA offer a great opportunity to exercise horses in a relaxing non-competitive environment. Following a period of wet weather, which often prevents turnout and limits exercise facilities, a hack in pleasant surroundings, with good company, can be the answer to many horses’ and riders’ prayers! With riders ranging in age from 6 to 60+ and on ponies and horses of equally diverse age and size, this is a sport with something for everyone. If you want to find out more, come along (with or without your horse) to Tollymore Forest Park on Sunday 10th February, 10.30 – 13.00, where you can ride as short or as long a Pleasure Ride you wish (within reason!). For those thinking about moving up to Competitive Trail Rides, there will be a ‘pre-novice’ distance of 16 miles. This will allow members and non-members to ride a Pleasure Ride over this distance, and to present the horse to the veterinary surgeon on duty before and after the ride. A Bronze Shamrock Qualifier (22 miles) will also be available for members and registered horses. For details contact Susan Sedgeman (028 40671104). After that, Armagh and Fermanagh are next, so please note 24th February (Gosford Forest) and 9th March (Florencecourt) in your diaries. Note to Editors: Irish Long Distance Riding Association is the body organising the sport of long distance or endurance riding in Ireland. It is affiliated to Horse Sport Ireland.
